If you have a chipped tooth, stained front teeth or are unhappy with the shape of your teeth, thanks to porcelain veneers, you will no longer have to hide your smile. Veneers are a form of cosmetic dentistry designed to help you have a beautiful, bright, white smile. They are also ideal for protecting the surface of teeth that have damage, which may decrease the need for more extensive dental procedures.
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Dental veneers are also known as porcelain veneers. They are extremely thin shells that are made from either a composite resin or porcelain material. Porcelain veneers are custom made and bonded to the surface of teeth with a special bonding material. Once the veneers are in place, they will recreate the natural look of your teeth. Veneers can be used to alter the shape, length, size and/or color of your natural teeth.
What are the Benefits of Dental Veneers?
If you hide your smile, because you are embarrassed by unattractive teeth, porcelain veneers may be the solution. Porcelain veneers can help solve a range of cosmetic dental problems, including:*Worn enamel-the enamel, which is the hard, thin substance covering the teeth, becomes discolored, dulled and worn. Worn enamel commonly occurs as a result of drinking tea, coffee and soft drinks; however, certain medications, tobacco products and poor oral hygiene can also cause damage to the enamel.*Normal wear and tear-your teeth will naturally begin to wear down as you age. Aged teeth may have an uneven appearance, chips, cracks and/or discoloration.*Genetics is often a cause of certain dental problems, such as spacing or gaps between the teeth that may widen as you age.*Uneven teeth-there are a number of reasons why teeth may be uneven, such as tooth grinding or normal wear and tear. One of the most common causes of uneven teeth is because permanent teeth did not come in straight during childhood, which causes teeth to continue to shift.*Teeth that are too short can usually be lengthened with the use of veneers.*Stained and/or discolored teeth can significantly whiten and look brighter with veneers.
Fitting porcelain veneers are a multi-step process, so you will have to go to the dentist office for at least three appointments. During the first appointment your dentist will examine your teeth and gums to ensure you are a good candidate for veneers. During the second appointment the veneers will be applied. During your last appointment your dentist will make sure the veneers are secure and comfortable. Porcelain veneers are designed to help improve your natural smile. They are custom designed to match the color of your natural teeth and will resemble your natural teeth, so to maintain your new smile, it is important to practice good oral hygiene and avoid eating hard foods that may damage the veneers.

Since I was a kid, my teeth have never been straight. For some reason my parents got braces my older sister but not me (note for parents: Get your kids braces when they are young!).
Anyway, I have always hated my teeth, didn’t like smiling. It was one of the few things I was very self conscious about. About six months ago I got four porcelain veneers placed on my top row. If anyone has questions, AMA.
